Gabions and River mattresses are exceptionally versatile. Often where natural features exist in the path of the construction work, the gabions and river mattresses can be manipulated to incorporate the feature into their design, while maintaining functionality. Figure 3, indicates such a situation. The protruding rock was of such a nature that it may well have needed to be blasted to be removed. This would have resulted in more funds being needed. Further the void created by the removal of the rock would have required backfill and compaction, requiring more funds. The river mattresses were manipulated to fit snuggly around this feature. Resulting in immediate aesthetical mitigating of the gabion wall and mattress feature, as well as preventing further interference with in situ natural features.
